The Dr. Cate Advantage

Your flute lesson dollar goes further with Dr. Cate Hummel because she has more training, experience and dedication to excellence than virtually any flute teacher around.  Provided a student practices regularly as instructed, you will see more progress in less time and advancement to higher ensembles in school at an earlier age.

Dr.  Cate can:

bulletTake a student from the very first notes on the flute to preparation for advanced degrees in Music Education or Performance anywhere in the world
bulletHelp virtually any student play with not just good tone, but great tone within just a few lessons
bulletHelp students learn how to practice effectively and build solid technique and practice habits
bulletHelp students play 2-3 grade levels beyond other flute players in school within a year or two of private lessons
bulletWork with students of every ambition level, from kids who want to play well for fun and enrichment to the most advanced student who wants to win competitions, participate in top youth orchestras and go to college/conservatory for music
bulletProvide a grounding in principles of music theory including scales, arpeggios and how understanding harmony makes learning music easier
bulletHelp students learn to play with musical feeling and understanding, not just correctly
bulletHelp students overcome stumbling blocks to enjoying the flute including problems with rhythm, tone production, poor hand positions, posture and breath control
bulletMake lessons fun for almost any student who is willing to put in the effort to develop their playing
bulletBuild self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment for students, along with knowledge about how to succeed at the flute

Specialties include preparation for ensemble placement auditions, IMEA auditions, chair challenges, flute competitions, college entrance auditions, youth orchestra auditions, summer/supplemental lessons for college students, and flute pedagogy for music educators.

This past school year alone, 2008-2009, fully half the flute players at IMEA District IX were Dr. Cate’s students, past students or had attended Dr. Cate’s Flute Camp at least once.  Three of her top students made IMEA State Honors Band or Orchestra.  Dr. Cate’s students played in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestras and McHenry County Youth Orchestras.  Several of Dr. Cate’s students participated in the Chicago Flute Club competitions, the Society of American Musicians and Union League competitions.  Former students have finished graduate degrees in flute from Indiana University, attended the University of Illinois/Champaign-Urbana as performance majors and graduated as music education majors and played in university orchestras at Purdue University and Bates College.
